Senior theatre major Dom Gaudioso claims not to be nervous. He’s a first-time director and it’s Oct. 30, 2014, opening night of his play, “9 Circles” at SUNY Oneonta. He can’t sit still, so he roams the hall outside the Hamblin Theater, talking to everyone he sees. “There’s a tradition—once the show opens it’s not my say anymore—no notes, no direction, it belongs to the cast,” he says at 7:19 pm, 41 minutes before show time. Then he ducks back into the theater to check on preparations. After the show begins, he settles into a seat in the rear, watching attentively at 7:45 pm. “A lot of students say the student-directed shows are most important for them, because they do everything themselves,” says Patrice Macaluso, theatre professor and department chair.<br />
